Name: Derived from French "peritot" (gold) and Arabic "faridat" (gem).
Used by Cleopatra, who called it "the sun gem."
One of the oldest known stones (1500 B.C.).
Sometimes called "poor man's emerald."
The largest cut peridot (319 carats) is housed at the Smithsonian Institution.
