THE ORIGINS:

The name "labradorite" comes from its main mining area, the Labrador coast of Canada, although it is also found in the United States, Mexico, Australia, India, Russia, Finland and Madagascar. A rarer variety, spectrolite, is found exclusively in Finland.

This gemstone, with its characteristic grey colour, is famous for "labradorescence," an optical phenomenon that generates fascinating iridescence. This effect is due to the interference of light on polygeminate crystals, altering their intensity and wavelengths.

One of the rarest varieties of labradorite is spectrolite, which is distinguished by its very dark background colour, more intense luster and particularly pronounced labradorescence. Mined exclusively in Finland, this gemstone is highly sought after and, as a result, has a higher value than common labradorite.
