ARCHANGELS:
Jophiel and Raguel
COLOURS:
pink, indigo, transparent, yellow and green
THE ORIGINS:
Kunzite owes its name to George Fredrik Kunz, an American gemologist as well as the first scholar to identify and describe this gemstone in the early 1900s.
.
Geological origin
Kunzite forms in pegmatites, igneous rocks rich in rare minerals and large crystals. Its pink colour is due to the presence of manganese, and it can discolour with prolonged exposure to sunlight due to its sensitivity to light.
This stone is often mined together with other gemstones such as tourmaline, lepidolite and quartz, and is distinguished by its vitreous luster, an optical effect called pleochroism (showing different colours depending on the angle of observation), and a certain fragility, which requires care in its use.
.
Main deposits
Kunzite is mined in various parts of the world, with known deposits in:
Afghanistan - provides some of the most intense and transparent specimens
Pakistan - particularly in the mountainous regions of the north
Brazil - important source of large crystals
Madagascar - produces good quality Kunzite with pinkish-violet hues
United States - especially in California, the original area of its discovery
Myanmar - occasionally provides rare crystals
It is curious to know that it was the Greeks who coined the term spodumene, i.e. the mineral species to which kunzite belongs, and with the word "spodòs," whose translation is"ash," they alluded to the slightly greyish hue characteristic of these gems. This shade is most visible in specimens when they are in their rough state. However, these gems are also used industrially, both to extract lithium metal and in the ceramic manufacturing process.
Although spodumene was discovered as a mining variety in 1877, it took two years to ascertain that kunzite and hiddenite were also exactly the same mineral.
In the field of crystal therapy kunzite is highly valued as it is believed to have the ability to align body, mind and spirit while instilling a pleasurable feeling of inner peace, thereby improving mood and raising self-esteem.
