THE ORIGINS:

History and Mythology

Origin of the name: The name "amethyst" comes from the Greek améthystos, meaning "not intoxicated." According to Greek mythology, the nymph Amethyst was turned into a crystal by Artemis to save her from the fury of the god Bacchus (Dionysus). Wine poured on the crystal dyed it purple, thus giving rise to the gemstone. From this legend also comes the belief that amethyst protects against drunkenness, so much so that the ancient Romans used it in goblets to stay sober during banquets.

Curiosities and Legends about Amethyst

An ancient amulet with eternal charm.

In ancient Egypt, amethyst was considered a powerful stone of protection, used during long journeys to guard against ambush and betrayal. It was also associated with spiritual purification and was used to relieve guilt. Today, it is a symbol of spiritual wisdom, so much so that many Catholic bishops still wear rings with amethyst.

In Europe, as early as the Neolithic period, amethyst was used both as a protective amulet and as a royal symbol, set in crowns and scepters.

Among the Greeks and Romans, this stone was believed to protect against the effects of alcohol: people often drank from amethyst goblets, believing it helped maintain lucidity. In Peru, however, it was a powerful amulet against witchcraft and poisons.

Amethyst is one of the most beloved and popular gems in jewellery, prized since ancient Egyptian times. Pharaohs considered it a symbol of royalty, power and protection, so much so that they used it in their seals and jewellery. Its purple colour, associated with nobility, made it an emblem of health and prosperity.
