Gentle perseverance: keep going even when the path isn’t perfect

The journey to becoming the best version of yourself
Season 1 – Chapter 3 – The Foundations – Article 4 of 5

There are times when getting started seems like the hardest part.

Choose a direction, identify what you want to change, transform a belief that doesn’t support you, and start cultivating a new one.

Then repeat.

Reflect. Write. Take action.

Day by day, you begin to build something new.

But sooner or later, something very simple can happen: you stop.

One day, you don’t do what you had planned. You don’t meditate, you don’t write, you don’t repeat your new affirmation, or you can’t bring yourself to do the action you had chosen.

And it is precisely at that moment that one of the most important foundations of change comes into play:

Perseverance.

Consistency is not perfection

Being consistent doesn’t mean doing everything perfectly, every day, without ever stopping.

It means continuing to support the direction we have chosen over time.

During the 21-day program, we focused on repetition:
a new belief is written down, repeated, incorporated into meditation, and accompanied by consistent actions.

Consistency is important because what we repeat over time can gradually become more familiar and become ingrained in the way we think and act.

But continuity and perfection are not the same thing.

If you’ve been on your journey for sixteen days and stop on the seventeenth day, those sixteen days don’t disappear.

The important question then becomes:

What do you plan to do the next day?

The moment you choose to return

When we stop doing something, a dangerous thought often creeps in:

โ€œIโ€™ve already missed it.โ€

โ€œI messed up the course.โ€

โ€œI should start over from the beginning.โ€

And this is exactly where we can make a different choice.

You don’t have to undo what you’ve done.

You don’t have to catch up on everything all at once.

And above all, you mustn’t let a break turn into giving up.

You can just start over.

Open your notebook again.

Return to your meditation.

Repeat the affirmation you have chosen.

Wear the piece of jewellery and reconnect with the quality and intention you are cultivating.

Perform a new action in the same direction.

The journey continues from where you are.

Why do we call it โ€œgentle perseveranceโ€?

Being gentle doesn’t mean being any less determined.

And that doesn’t mean constantly making excuses for yourself.

It means preventing the journey toward change from becoming a new form of pressure we put on ourselves.

Gentle perseverance combines two elements:

discipline and self-respect.

The rules remind you:

โ€œI chose this path, and I continue to build on it.โ€

Kindness allows you to say:

โ€œIโ€™ve stopped, but that doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™ve failed. I can start over.โ€

That’s an important difference.

Because a path built solely on pressure risks becoming just another โ€œI have to.โ€

Our journey, on the other hand, begins with a โ€œchoice.โ€

I choose my own path.

I choose what I want to grow.

I choose to say it again.

And when something disrupts my rhythm, I choose to get back on track.

It’s not a single day that defines the journey

Imagine looking at a calendar.

There are many days marked on the calendar, and then, suddenly, a blank space.

You could just look at that space.

Or you could take a look at everything you’ve built around it.

This second perspective completely changes the meaning of the interruption.

You’re not looking for a perfect sequence of days.

You’re building continuity over time.

That’s why it’s helpful to reflect on your journey not only by asking yourself:

โ€œDid I do everything?โ€

but also:

โ€œAm I still heading in the direction Iโ€™ve chosen?โ€

A quick weekly check

At the end of the week, take a few minutes to reflect on your progress.

Write in your notebook:

What have I been able to stick with consistently?

Where did I leave off?

Did I manage to get back on track?

What small gesture do I want to continue doing next week?

Don’t use these questions to judge things you haven’t done.

Use them to determine whether your actions continue to support the person you’ve chosen to become.

Keep building your foundation

In the first step of this chapter, we identified the resources we already have.

Then we looked at the beliefs that can either support us or hold us back.

We chose a new belief and began to cultivate it through repetition, meditation, writing, stone guidance, and action.

Now let’s add another key component:

Perseverance.

Because a choice can point you in a new direction.

Repetition can help build a new habit.

But it is consistency over time that allows what you are building to become increasingly solid.

Don’t look for a perfect path.

Find a path that you’re willing to follow.

If you stop, start again.
If you lose your rhythm, find it again.
If one day is empty, continue the next day.

Because perseverance doesn’t mean never stopping.

It means choosing, once again, to continue in the direction you’ve chosen.
